Apul's 77th Birthday

1.jpg

"Apul" is Kazakh for Granny (or some derivative of Grandmother).  Gambrill lives with 3 women- a grandmother, a mom (Natasha) and a daughter (Rita). Apul is the one on the right and she turned 77 on Friday.  I went over to help celebrate and the family cooked shashlik.

Nurlan, the neighbor came over too. He was in charge of cooking the shashlik.  Shashlik is what we call shish-kabob. Its grilled over wood. Actually, pine needles, then pine cones, then wood.

While the shashlik was on, I walked through the garden to inspect. Here are one clump of tomatoes. We have 4 large clumps of tomatoes- this is the smaller of them.

The spread.  It was a good party.

My pepper plants in my window. They are doing well!

My basil. The pot on the left are my tomatoes. I planted them late because I bought some small tomato plants in Almaty last month. I'm pleased with my garden so far.
