Doing the Wash

1.jpg
Heating the water

10 months into Kazakhstan and I'm officially doing my first load of laundry.  Work here is divided among the two sexes- man's work and woman's work. Washing clothes isn't mans work and since I've lived with a family up until now I've had the good fortune to not have to do a single load! ha. It isn't sexist; the woman are actually protective and persistent with what they perceive as their job.  But my family is gone this month so the chore falls to me. I thought I'd show you how I have to wash since its different.

We use an agitator. Add the hot water, soap, clothes and let it go!

Time to rinse and ring by hand. The bathtub is my reservoir of water, as water isn't always available.

Drain the water, flush it down the toilet, clean the machine and thats it. My pants still have a grass stain on them. My host family gets out unbelievable stains, so I guess I have a lot left to learn.
