Billboards

These are of a couple of billboards I saw in Almaty that I thought were interesting. They are definitely Soviet style, aren’t they? It is in both Kazakh and Russian and translates to “I serve the people.” It is a billboard for a TV station. There were several others that I saw but wasn’t able to take a picture of. I think they are pretty fascinating. The clinched fist and the arm that immediately reminded me of the Statue of Liberty with the “$” sign…..pretty wild.

To contrast these, here is a real Soviet propaganda poster from back in the day. It is titled “Freedom in the American Way.” Clockwise starting in upper right: Freedom of the Press, Personal Freedom, Freedom of Peaceful Demonstration, and Freedom of Opinions. On the building is written “wall street.”

Anyway, I find this stuff interesting. I have quite a few old Soviet posters. I’ll post them when I get to site and have time to translate them for you. More to come soon.
